Chess is a popular game at ETSS Wicklow with numerous sets available to play at lunch time and a school chess championship open to all students with great prizes for those who reach the semi-finals and final. In the first ever School Chess Championship, the league stages began at the school and then moved online after the school closure due to Covid-19. Below is a photo from the final where live commentary was provided by staff:
This year's final was between Sonny and Little Rose - two amazing chess players who were locked in battle for almost an hour before Little Rose was finally declared the fist ever Chess Champion of ETSS Wicklow. Sonny definitely looks like a player who will have his moment in the future, but for now, he'll have to wait - it is Little Rose's year. We look forward to an even bigger competition next year with all the new students arriving. Definitely some great times ahead for chess enthusiasts in the school. One thing we have learned this year is that the chess application we were using is a great way for students to connect and play chess in their free time too - so for those who want to get to the final next year, there's no better time than now to start playing - at home with your family and online with your friends. Thanks to all who participated in this year's competition for making it such a great success.
