Junior Cycle

Junior Cycle at ETSS Wicklow is a three-year programme that supports students to build strong foundations in learning, develop key skills, and grow in confidence as active and responsible learners. Our approach reflects the Educate Together ethos: equality-based, co-educational, student-centred and democratically run.

What Junior Cycle looks like

Students experience a broad and balanced curriculum, with a mix of core subjects and optional choices. Learning is supported through a range of teaching approaches, including active learning, collaboration, project work and regular feedback.

  • Broad learning: a wide range of subjects across languages, sciences, humanities, creative arts and practical areas.
  • Student voice: students are encouraged to reflect on progress and take ownership of learning.
  • Ongoing assessment: a combination of classroom-based assessments and final examinations.

Wellbeing in Junior Cycle

Wellbeing is an important part of Junior Cycle. Students develop skills and strategies to support mental, physical and social wellbeing through learning experiences across the school.

  • Wellbeing is supported through subjects such as SPHE, PE and CSPE, alongside a range of other learning experiences.
  • Pastoral supports, tutor time and student voice initiatives contribute to a positive and inclusive school environment.

Subjects and options

Subject availability can vary from year to year depending on student choice and timetabling. We aim to provide a wide range of options so that students can explore interests and strengths.

Typical areas of study include:

  • Languages
  • Mathematics and Sciences
  • Humanities (e.g. History, Geography, Social subjects)
  • Creative and performing arts
  • Practical and applied subjects

See individual subject pages for more information.

Short Courses

Junior Cycle short courses provide additional opportunities for students to develop key skills and explore interests through engaging, practical learning. They can also contribute to students’ overall wellbeing and personal development.

Short courses offered at ETSS Wicklow may include areas such as digital learning, creative subjects, communication and student-led learning experiences.

Details of current short course choices are shared with students and families during subject choice and timetabling each year.
